Freeze Frame #5

TVbyGIRLS is all about new perspectives. We know how fun it is to skylark with an idea and look at it in lots of different ways. So do our new friends, Tiny Circus.
Tiny Circus is a group we met working with the Minnesota History Center. Leah, Molly and Barbara spent two days with this imaginative group from Grinnell, Iowa. We learned how to make cool stop motion films. Something we are going to continue to do in our workshops with girls across Minnesota.
Tiny Circus works with communities across the country to create “the other histories of the world”. Quirky, imaginative, reinventions of how something came to be. Ever wonder about the history of smiles? Or of Popcorn? Or of Maps?
What history do you think about? History of giggles? History of clouds? History of ink?
TVbyGIRLS (and ten other people we had never met) discovered the hidden truth of The History of Pillows. Then, the film version was shared with St. Paul on a lovely summer evening with lots of people sitting on a grassy knoll at the Minnesota History Center. Our movie was projected outside from Tiny Circus’ remodeled airstream trailer. A perfect evening.
Check it out here and see some of the other histories. You can also find photos from our venture (and others) on Tiny Circus' blog
Another exciting note:
Four of TVbyGIRLS works were accepted into the Citizen Jane Film Festival in Missouri. Accepted films will be screened at their festival in Columbia, Missouri from Friday, OCTOBER 16 – Sunday, OCTOBER 18, 2009.

Behind Bullies
12 year old Casey is making a short documentary on bullying. Her words, "Bullying is a larger problem than people realize. I see how it affects other kids. I know what it feels like and I want to help it stop. I want to tell the truth about who can be a Bully and who can be a victim. I also want to tell the truth about what happens when you talk about your differences and about what is going on to cause the bullying behavior." She has received an Ann Bancroft Dare to Dream Mini-Grant as well as a Mix It Up grant.
